Family dysfunction

Family dysfunction is probably the single largest problem facing our species.

Much of who and what we are is established in the first half dozen years of life.

Our sensate, emotional and relational systems are all established then.  Because so much trauma has dogged the development of “civilisation” over the last 10 000 years, through wars, disease, famine and natural disaster.

Because interpersonal violence and sexual abuse has been so under reported and under addressed, family members have often had to deal with traumatic adjustments.

These limit their capacity to adjust and to empathise, thus often wittingly transmitting trauma across generations.

There may also be epi-genetic factors involved here. Even if trauma is not a part of the family system, often a lack of education about what is optimal for brain, mind and self development, may be absent.

This simple omission can create dysfunction.

Only in the last 20 years, for the first time in human history, have we begun to understand the nature of both trauma and brain development.

It is hard to be functional when you don’t know what it looks like.

Discovering neuroplasticity and a deeper understanding of development has given us a formula for healing inter generational dysfunction.
