Parenting
How many courses have you taken in school, university, TAFE, or adult learning that teach the skills of parenting? When asked, most people respond with "none." It's extraordinary how little time and effort we put into training people on how to navigate the intricate skills of parenting.
Donald Winnicott, a British paediatric psychiatrist, famously said that ideal parenting is "good enough" parenting. He meant that if you are too perfect as a parent, your child never learns independence or resilience because they operate under the shadow of an older, more empowered adult, who is unattainable. The great news is that we can make mistakes as parents and not permanently wound our children. However, we cannot afford to fail too spectacularly because the developing mind and brain of a child are entirely dependent on adult care for years after birth. This level of dependence is unique in the animal kingdom.
At Integrative Psychology & Medicine, we believe in providing you with the support and knowledge to navigate the journey of parenting. We aim to help you build the skills and confidence needed to be a "good enough" parent, fostering independence and resilience in your child while ensuring their development is nurtured with care and compassion.
