Psychedelic Medicine is currently enjoying a renaissance. During the 1950’s and 1960’s a great deal of research went into this promising paradigm of mental health care. With the advent of prohibition in the 1970’s this work was shut down for 40 years. IP&M has a deep affinity with psychedelic medicine having worked closely with one the paradigm’s founders, Dr Stanislav Grof for more than a decade, leading to the opening of a treatment centre in North Carolina, Fire’s Creek, a venture that ran for several years in the early 2000’s.
IP&M have been involved in the psychedelic renaissance initially through training, and developing a comprehensive Certificate of Psychedelic Assisted Therapy (PAT), described by Prof David Nutt at the time as the world’s best training program.
More recently the leads in IP&M Nigel Denning and Dr Traill Dowie have trained therapists in MDMA for PTSD through a Perth based clinical enterprise as well as taking clinical lead roles with three (3) clinical trials through Monarch Health. Nigel and Traill are visiting fellows of the Australian National University and the trials that they lead involve psilocybin and MDMA treatment for treatment resistant depression and OCD, as well as an experiential program for therapist who have trained in PAT but who are seeking supported, clinical, experiential exposure to the medicines. We have supported more than 70 people through these trials to date, with more due for implementation in 2025. We are deeply committed to a safe and balanced role out of these new treatment protocols. Whilst not a panacea, psychedelic medicine has proven worldwide, to offer amelioration of suffering and hope to many people. The work is not suitable for everyone, therefore careful selection, preparation and integration are essential elements of any program.
