Dr Fiona McGlade
PsychiatristI would like to introduce myself as a psychiatrist with over twenty-five years of experience. I have worked across two states in public and private health, urban and rural settings, general hospitals, community clinics and from my private practice. It would be fair to say that I have assisted people with a broad range of clinical conditions and from many walks in life.
I have undertaken postgraduate training in Infant Mental Health. This has established a deep and continuing interest in the importance of good early life care as the critical foundation for healthy psychological development through life. My psychotherapeutic approach evolves naturally from this space, with emphasis and attention given to the principles of attachment and psychodynamic theory. I seek a style of deep and attentive listening to help my patients uncover their story and further explore their difficulties within a safe therapeutic space and supportive treatment alliance.
Over the years, I have treated many veterans from the military, from whom I have learned much about the impact of trauma. Addressing personal trauma, in its many forms, continues to be a significant part of my work. Increasingly, I work with somatic based treatments to assist with the management of trauma symptomatology.
For four years, including the period of the COVID 19 pandemic, I had the privilege of working for the Victorian Doctors’ Health Programme. My motivation for this work arose from the personal lived experience of having survived major illness, along with the challenges that this scenario presents. I remain available to provide support to all members of the medical profession seeking assistance for any reason.
I have a life-long commitment towards supporting Indigenous health and hold a deep respect for the holistic indigenous models of social and emotional wellbeing. We have much to learn and benefit from these traditional systems of knowledge and wisdom.
From a foundation of broad clinical experience, I aim to work flexibly and in active collaboration with my patients to determine what form and degree of support best suits their needs. As a psychiatrist, I can offer psychotherapy, some somatic therapies and the careful prescribing of psychoactive medications.
Whilst maintaining a commitment to continue to develop my understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of our work, I hold the belief that it is the clinical work with patients that remains our greatest teacher.
I see clients at Integrative Psychology & Medicine's East Melbourne clinic and also offer telehealth appointments.
