Psychiatry
What is a Psychiatrist?
A psychiatrist is a qualified medical doctor who has obtained an additional qualification to become a specialist in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness and emotional disorders. Treatment methods can be psychological or involve medication and may be a combination of these. In some cases, admission to hospital is required for investigation and treatment.
Psychiatric Assessment
Psychiatric assessment is conducted to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the client and to best determine treatment. This may result in a diagnosis (depending on the symptoms the client is experiencing) and to develop a treatment plan. The first session is an assessment session and may include asking the individual questions about his/her history, current experiences, as well as mental and physical health. The client may be asked to complete assessment tools, which measure psychological symptoms. An individual’s medical past and present symptoms and conditions are also considered in formulating a specific treatment plan.
Psychiatry Treatment
Psychiatric Treatment can be psychological (therapy) and/or involve medication. The treatment options are discussed with the individual following assessment.
